"Canary in a Gold Mind"
Though the works are stylized and whimsical, they evoke a sense of the wildlife struggling in their natural habitat.  Lommatsch notes, “Many of my bird-like creatures have become victims of ‘entrapment’ within metal and wooden sculptural forms.  A predicament of ‘boundaries’ and challenges is presented in these pieces.  I am asking those who view my work to contemplate what is happening to our planet, to our environment, to our creatures… to us.  My concerns lie in the struggle between Man and Nature.  And, due to man’s carelessness and greed – freedom and prison have become ambiguous terms.”

Monterey Bonsai
Fired stoneware clay, glaze, and paint. The inspiration for this tree came from a visit to Carmel California where the few cypress trees left represent what was once a very large forest on the west coast. The surviving trees from this forest are as old as 2000 years.

"I see a world in the future in which we understand that all life is related to us and we treat that life with great humility and respect. I see us as well as social creatures, and when I began to look back and say, 'what is the fundamental bottom line for us as social creatures?'...I couldn't believe it because it seemed so hippy dippy, but it was Love. Love is the force that makes us fully human."
